umbrella corps

UMBRELLA CORPS is a multi-player tactical shooter. According to CAPCOM, it is considered “loosely canon” within the BIOHAZARD universe. If true, then it is set after the events of BIOHAZARD 6.

PLOT

The single player mission “The Experiment” follows an agent codenamed 3A-7 as he is sent out to test new equipment for biological warfare.

The multiplayer section features 10 competing organizations trying to obtain Umbrella’s data and secrets.

Especially the data pertaining to the development of B.O.W.s.

FEATURES

UMBRELLA CORPS features fast-paced multiplayer combat. With a heavy emphasis on gear and weapons, this title also features a substantial progression and customization system. Players can switch between first and third person modes, allowing for full environment awareness and precision aiming when firing upon enemies. Zombies can also be used as a defensive shield by grabbing them.

Maps in UMBRELLA CORPS are small in size to place an emphasis on close quarter combat. Enemies both player controlled and A.I. controlled can be dealt with head-on or by using the gear and environment.

DEVELOPMENT NOTES

CAPCOM continued its desired development of a tactical based shooter within the BIOHAZARD universe with UMBRELLA CORPS.

This was the first game to be developed by CAPCOM which did not feature the MT Framework as its main engine since its initial creation. CAPCOM instead decided to develop UMBRELLA CORPS using the Unity 3D engine. This could have been due to possible network limitations presented within MT Framework, especially since Unity 3D offers Unity Matchmaker Servers which simplifies player connectivity.

Unity 3D also offers Unity Relay Servers which brokers network traffic to ensure quality sessions between players regardless of their territory. Unity Multiplayer also offers the ability to scale your player servers organically, thus giving CAPCOM complete control over its multiplayer network. If CAPCOM did make its decision due to the features outlined above, it will be interesting to see if CAPCOM continues to use non-proprietary engines for their multiplayer games, especially online BIOHAZARD titles.
