biohazard survivor

BIOHAZARD Survivor was the first spin-off of the series. It was also one of the first titles to be outsourced by CAPCOM, it features the events of the “Sheena Island incident” and Umbrella’s reach beyond Raccoon City.

PLOT

The game follows an unnamed protagonist who wakes up with amnesia after a helicopter crash on Sheena Island.

Trying to regain his memory the unnamed character discovers a viral outbreak of which Umbrella is responsible.

Armed with only a handgun, he embarks on his horrific journey.

FEATURES

BIOHAZARD Survivor was one of the first titles to stray away from the classic third-person presentation. It featured a first-person presentation which included enemies from BIOHAZARD 2. It was also the first BIOHAZARD title to feature the NAMCO GunCon as an optional method for input. Another first for the series, BIOHAZARD Survivor was developed outside of CAPCOM by the Japanese ghost developer TOSE.

Since Survivor features a first-person perspective the environments and characters look extremely pixelated compared to the previous BIOHAZARD titles released on the original Sony PlayStation.

DEVELOPMENT NOTES

BIOHAZARD Survivor was one of the first titles to be outsourced by CAPCOM, it was also one of their first spin-off titles.

The game was originally named BIOHAZARD Survivor: Behind The Mask. The official release name was later changed to BIOHAZARD Survivor. Survivor was written by Noboru Sugimura and Naoyuki Sakai. Sugimura had previously written BIOHAZARD 2 and was well versed in the BIOHAZARD universe. His writing has actually contributed much of the key lore for the BIOHAZARD series.

Many enemies were taken from BIOHAZARD 2, with their animations and texture maps being mostly intact from their original game. Survivor suffered from low-quality visuals mostly due to the perspective and proximity to the enemies and 3D environments. This is most noticeable when comparing it to Mikami’s Production Studio 4 release of Dino Crisis, which also featured real-time 3D assets and environments. The support for the GunCon was dropped in North America due to the current political climate in the United States.
