biohazard the darkside chronicles

BIOHAZARD The Darkside Chronicles is an on-rails shooter originally released on the Nintendo Wii. The game features abridged re-tellings of BIOHAZARD 2 and Code Veronica. Along with a brand new scenario.

PLOT

Besides the re-telling of BIOHAZARD 2 and Code Veronica, the main focus of the game is the new scenario Operation Javier.

This story follows Leon S. Kennedy and Jack Krauser on their mission to stop Javier Hidalgo a former drug lord with ties to the Umbrella Corporation.

They soon meet Manuela, Javier’s daughter, who agrees to help them.

FEATURES

BIOHAZARD The Darkside Chronicles is the second rail shooter to be developed and released for the Nintendo Wii. It enhances previous features seen in BIOHAZARD The Umbrella Chronicles such as each character having their own health bar. There are also “evade moves” which can be performed by the player after successfully completing a quick time event, enhancing the ongoing action sequences.

Headshots were also made much easier to perform, as well as the inclusion of a status screen. Players can pick up green herbs to help them heal their own health meter, however, there is only one first aid spray available per chapter.

DEVELOPMENT NOTES

The Development of The Darkside Chronicles began almost immediately after the release of The Umbrella Chronicles.

CAPCOM was extremely satisfied with Cavia’s previous involvement in Dead Aim and The Umbrella Chronicles, they decided to bring them back as a Vendor for this next installment. CAPCOM decided to retain the first-person perspective as it was the best way to re-tell the scenarios which were missing from The Umbrella Chronicles. The main focus for this title was the emphasis on horror with specific camera movements.

Research was done by taking cameras out on the streets of Japan and researching how the camera moved during hectic situations. Cavia reached a higher level in quality compared to The Umbrella Chronicles, this was achieved by pulling all of their resources for the development of The Darkside Chronicles, character models, textures, and animations were of much higher quality. Development also began before the production of the BIOHAZARD Degeneration CG film, thus CAPCOM ruled out connections to the new film and the events of BIOHAZARD 5.
