biohazard the mercenaries 3D

BIOHAZARD The Mercenaries 3D is a mobile title featuring multiplayer for the Nintendo 3DS. The game features a non-canon scenario which pits multiple characters from the BIOHAZARD series competing in maps from BIOHAZARD 4 and BIOHAZARD 5.

PLOT

There is no specific plot for The Mercenaries 3D. It features BIOHAZARD characters Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine and Albert Wesker.

They are joined by Claire Redfield, Jack Krauser, Barry Burton, Rebecca Chambers and HUNK presented in classic BIOHAZARD Mercenaries mode fashion.

The Mercenaries 3D features fast-paced co-op action on the go.

FEATURES

BIOHAZARD The Mercenaries 3D features characters moving while shooting, reloading, and healing, keeping a high pace of action throughout each map. Due to the dual screen setup of the Nintendo 3DS, the top screen features the main gameplay while the bottom screen displays inventory management. Players were also able to customize their character’s abilities and weapon loadouts.

Traditional to many BIOHAZARD titles of the past, the game also features unlockable alternate costumes for each character. This title also featured a playable demo of the then-upcoming BIOHAZARD Revelations.

DEVELOPMENT NOTES

The Mercenaries 3D was most likely developed as a proof of concept for the capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS hardware.

Taking assets from BIOHAZARD 4 and BIOHAZARD 5 CAPCOM tested the limits of Nintendo’s latest handheld with the idea of releasing a bigger title for the platform in the foreseeable future. Besides the co-op capabilities, much of the work went into re-working the environments to fit the current engine. For example, the maps from BIOHAZARD 4 needed to be set up per MT Framework standards.

This also required all levels to have a lower polycount in order to optimize performance. Along with optimizing the level geometry, textures also needed to be re-worked for performance. The characters were re-skinned to the current skeletal rigs used by MT Framework. The engine itself was re-worked to present a “Lite” version of the current MT Framework build. This Mobile version of MT Framework provided the base for the development of BIOHAZARD Revelations which was released 1 year later.
