biohazard 7

BIOHAZARD 7 is the first numbered entry in the series to feature a first-person presentation. It features the events of the “Dulvey Haunted House incident”. It had a greater focus on horror compared to the previous 3 numbered entries.

PLOT

The story follows Ethan Winters as he searches for his wife Mia. This leads him to the Baker family ranch in Dulvey, Louisiana.

Ethan encounters the mysterious Baker family which consists of Jack Baker, Marguerite Baker, and Lucas Baker.

Ethan quickly discovers that something terrible has befallen the Baker ranch.

FEATURES

BIOHAZARD 7 took a step back from the hardcore action which was prevalent in BIOHAZARD 4, 5, and 6. The emphasis on horror was the main theme for this title. The presentation in first-person was chosen to amplify the atmosphere. BIOHAZARD 7 was also presented in VR for the Sony PlayStation 4. Exploration was brought back to the series by having the story focused on one location.

BIOHAZARD 7 is also the first numbered title to be written by a Westerner, Richard Pearsey. Whom previously wrote the two FEAR expansions Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate, as well as Spec Ops The Line.

DEVELOPMENT NOTES

BIOHAZARD 7 began full development in February 2014, after changing direction from a previous 2013 preliminary version.

The development team decided that scaling back on the action presented in the previous 3 numbered entries, focusing on 1 location and having a first-person perspective would bring back the classic horror elements prevalent in the original installments. Thus bringing BIOHAZARD 7 back to an authentic survival horror experience. A new engine was built from the ground up, the RE Engine, which features photorealistic rendering along with VR Capabilities.

Also scaled back was the number of development staff, a team of around 120 helped bring BIOHAZARD 7 to life. During design, a majority of the enemies were modeled physically, then scanned and photographed through photogrammetry, a process which extracts surface point positions. Around half of the general assets for BIOHAZARD 7 were created using this technique. The other half required traditional 3D modeling and sculpting tools to achieve the desired effect on characters and environments.
